Shapiro administration announces increased investment in urban agriculture in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro announced a plan on Tuesday with the Giant Food Company to tackle food deserts by investing in urban agriculture.Shapiro toured York Fresh Food Farms, where he learned about local fresh produce and how it contributes to the commonwealth.Shapiro said a $500,000 grant to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture will help alleviate access to food in some communities. Shapiro said in York County alone, 35,000 face hunger.”This is a real challenge, not just for York County, but for our entire commonwealth. And it affects rural and urban communities alike. It doesn’t follow any particular municipal boundary. We’ve got to be there to lift and support our fellow Pennsylvanians,” Shapiro said.On top of the grant, the Giant Food Company presented a $200,000 donation to the Department of Agriculture, bringing the total funds available to $700,000.
