Nestlé announced that it is investing in bringing regenerative agriculture to the wheat farms in its DiGiorno supply chain. The investment will cover 100,000 acres of farmland, which is double the amount of wheat needed for DiGiorno products.
Almost two-thirds of Nestlé’s greenhouse gas emissions emanate from its sourcing practices. The company’s net zero emissions goal of 2050 begins with using regenerative agriculture for 20% of its sourced ingredients by 2025 and 50% by 2030.
“At Nestlé our aim is to help leave the world better than we found it, and as the world’s largest food and beverage company, we have a tremendous opportunity to help create a regenerative, healthy food system…,” said Steve Presley, CEO, Nestlé Zone North America.
DiGiorno is partnering with two of its primary wheat flour suppliers, ADM and Ardent Mills. The investment in regenerative agriculture will benefit farms in Kansas, North Dakota, Indiana and Missouri. The farms will receive financial and technical support to ensure quality assurance and understanding of the practices, which could include options like planting cover crops, reducing tillage and pesticides and enhancing biodiversity.
The press release reports that “ADM recently measured some outcomes of farmers who have implemented regenerative agriculture methods and reported that over half of the wheat farms in the program used cover crops or living roots in 2022, which helped to sequester more than 3,800 metric tons of CO2e—that’s equivalent to taking nearly 850 gas-powered cars off the road for one year.”
