Over 27 million acres, or roughly 75 percent of the Prairie State’s total land area, are devoted to agriculture in Illinois. There are several opportunities to purchase local farmers’ fresh goods in and around Chicago, including beef, eggs, and other items. An increasingly well-liked method for doing that is community-supported agriculture (CSA).

In accordance with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, CSAs (sometimes referred to as “farm shares”) are made up of “a community of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation so that the farmland becomes, either legally or spiritually, the community’s farm.”

The process is as follows: after paying the farmer a certain amount, the customer receives a portion of the farmer’s produce each week or month. The majority of those items arrive in a box or bag and can be picked up at a predetermined location or delivered right to your house.

Different CSAs provide various services. Produce is most prevalent and includes fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Fresh meat, eggs, and other pantry essentials like honey or even flowers are available from various farms. As a result, there is a large range in pricing. While some need one sizable upfront payment for the full season, others offer payment options. Some CSAs also take EBT.

Just a few of the CSAs that serve the Chicago region are listed here. A few crucial points: the quoted prices may not be accurate and change depending on the season. Since we initially put together this list, some CSAs could now be at capacity, so always check with the producer first for availability, cost, and delivery choices.
